Cerro Gordo is located in the Inyo Mountains, high above dry Owens Lake. Around 1870, from this city flowed $13,000,000 in silver and lead bullion.

The place was founded by Mexicans around 1864. It was nearly unknown because of its remote location until a prospector came to Virginia City NV and showed the people a piece of rich silver ore. The rush began.

In Cerro Gordo there was more silver gained than in any other Californian Town. The City of Los Angeles wouldn't exist without the wealth of the Cerro Gordo mines.

Travellers reach the ghost town of Cerro Gordo by a steep road which goes from Keeler about 8 miles up the hill. The place is private property and there are mining activities going on. Visitors should ask information about the conditions at the Visitor Center at Lone Pine. The reward will be some well-preserved buildings.
