Pioneerville was also called Pioneer City and Hogem. The story of the name Hogem is that the first miners in the area hogged up all the good placer around.

As the next group of prospectors became quite irate over the greediness, they let forth a few appropriate words and moved on down Grimes Creek to start Centerville. Human nature being what it is, it is interesting to note that in the White Pine Mining District in Nevada there was another Hogem, named under very similar circumstances.

Only a few buildings remain at Pioneerville, but it was once a fair sized community with a population of two thousand and the first post office in the Basin.

On past Pioneerville at Grimes Summit is a monument to mark the grave of George Grimes, who was killed by Indians while on the initial prospecting trip and hastily buried near this spot.
